Bastille Day

It was a double-celebratory weekend for France this July 14 and 15. Their team won the Soccer World Cup and added another star to their record, which happened right after Bastille Day, France’s National Holiday. I had a third reason to celebrate with a French twist: friendship – more specifically, a new friendship with French visitors to the U.S.

And since a party is better with more people, I also invited a bunch of my co-nationals (Romanians), plus some Russians and Americans to gather and enjoy a summer cookout. The food was plentiful and delicious, with the center stage being taken by grilled meat, charcuterie, Bordeaux – and other – wine, brie cheese, pâté, stuffed portobello mushrooms, and fresh fruit.

Both the conversation and the wine flowing smoothly, we fired up the grill and did several rounds of mesquite-smoked barbecue, retreating to the air-conditioned dining room to savor the seared bites.

La pièce de résistance was the dessert: French macarons – not to be confused with macaroons (read about the difference between the two).

It was a great evening of celebrating France with an international crew, engaging conversation, and delightful flavors.
