I love living in Colorado and we always look forward to hosting friends who appreciate the outdoors. In the spring of 2022, our good friends Keonia and JP came to see us (and celebrate my getting older, aka my birthday). One of the best things about living in Colorado is that we are never far from spectacular natural statements! Each season emphasizes a different beauty of the rugged landscape. We have the added bonus of having friends in high places: our neighbors and friends have a summer cabin near Lake Granby (which sits at 8,284 feet elevation), about two hours’ drive from where we live, just outside and west of Denver.

Antelope Canyon—Navajo Nation Sandstone Slot Canyon
There is no doubt that the main attraction in the area is the Antelope Canyon. And for good reason! Renowned for its undulating walls and light beams, Antelope Canyon was named after the pronghorn antelopes that once roamed the area in abundance (more numerous than bison). The pronghorns are indigenous to North America, and are more closely related to the giraffe rather than to deer or antelopes. Nowadays, they can still be seen in the American West but their numbers vastly decreased from 100 million to about 13,000.
