Wine, waterfalls, and mouth-watering food were the highlights of our next part of the trip through Oregon, early September. Known for its pinot noir wines, Oregon is home to many wineries and we were happy overnight guests at Eola Hills Legacy Winery, near Salem. Next, we visited Columbia River Gorge and admired the impressive Multnomah Falls. Closer to Portland, we savored local Thai fare.

Yaquina Lighthouse and Newport, OR
Beautifully restored and kept, Yaquina Head Lighthouse stands the tallest on the Oregon coast, and is the only lighthouse with the living quarters attached. It took over the job of the old Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, which is the only historic wooden Oregon lighthouse still standing.

I love a good crab cake and fresh seafood, so when I saw a chance to stay at an RV park that organized crabbing trips, I signed up! Netarts Bay in Oregon is known for Dungeness Crab, as well as Red Rock Crab and many varieties of clams.

Despite standing only 38 feet high, Cape Mears Lighthouse-the shortest in Oregon-guided ships through the fog effectively (with the help of a 200 ft cliff base and fancy French lens) for 73 years. Now subject to occasional vandalism, the small white lighthouse welcomes visitors who want to hear about Tillamook history and shares the spotlight with the other attractions at Cape Mears Scenic Point, such as the famed “Octopus Tree“- an unusual Sitka spruce tree, the largest colony of nesting common murres, miles of hiking trails, and whale sightings.

Before visiting the West Coast, I had never heard of Tillamook cheese. After one taste, I was hooked. And the best part was actually the ice cream! We visited the farm and factory, as well as the nearby Blue Heron farm in the town of Tillamook, OR.
