It’s a cold day in February but we feel immediately warmed up as we squeeze through a happy crowd: hundreds of Golden Retrievers and their owners parade through the quiet mountain town of Golden, Colorado for the annual Goldens in Golden event. Set up as a fundraiser for furry friends, the event is an irresistible attraction for locals and visitors alike, and it’s not exclusive to the breed; all leashed, trained, and friendly dogs are welcome!
This year, we parked on Ford Street, on the southeast side of downtown Golden and walked to Washington Street where hundreds of happy faces and wagging tails paraded. I found it hard to focus on taking photos instead of petting all the dogs passing by. In no time, a (no doubt goofy) smile affixed itself on my face as I walked upstream toward Parfet Park by Clear Creek River.
Heeding from Scotland, Golden Retrievers are hunting dogs but also make great pets and companions. They can be effective guides for the blind and search-and-rescue helpers. We all could learn from their joyous approach to life and predisposition to maintain a puppyish behavior through adulthood. Their happy disposition shows from muzzle to tail. I love their signature smile (eyes narrowed and happy grin) and their feathery tail carried high with a “merry action,” as breed fanciers describe it.

- Whispering sweet nothings into my friend’s ear
- Proud dog daddy with tired pup
- Purse pooch
- All smiles and wags pup
- Wind-in-my-beard, enjoying a cool ride
